This i-learn module on continuity of carer has been designed for student midwives, lecturers, practising clinical midwives and maternity support workers in the UK who want to understand more about a maternity model based around continuity of carer.

The module provides short easy to understand summaries of current research evidence on this topic, together with brief overviews of the current national maternity policies that recommend continuity of carer. It also includes interactive resources to bust some of the myths that we know are out there and lessons from the front line helping us learn from earlier successes (and failures) in running sustainable continuity models.

After completing this module you will be able to:

  • define ‘midwifery continuity of carer’ (MCoC) in maternity care
  • describe how midwifery continuity of carer can improve quality, including safety, of maternity care
  • describe what a midwifery continuity model of care should and should not look like
  • share ideas with your colleagues about how midwifery continuity of carer can be implemented in a way that works for midwives and support workers as well as women and families
