Midwifery continuity of carer is a key and central recommendation of current maternity policies in England, Wales and Scotland. Since the publication of Better Births in 2016 and Best Start in 2017, midwifery leaders in both England and Scotland have been working to test and implement midwifery continuity of carer models at scale. As the testing and implementation progresses, new lessons and understanding are emerging.

This i-learn module aims to share some of the learning so far. The module focuses on three key elements that are fundamental to the implementation of sustainable models of continuity of carer: employing appropriate, evidence based implementation methods; building change through co-production and real staff engagement; ensuring that the new model is appropriately staffed for safe, high quality care.

The module is designed for heads of midwifery, clinical midwives and project managers implementing continuity of carer in maternity services, to support the successful implementation of midwifery continuity of carer for the benefit of women and families in a way that works for midwives and support workers providing care.

Once you have completed this module you will:

  • have an understanding of how implementation science and implementation science tools can support you in implementation of midwifery continuity of carer
  • be familiar with the key approaches to staff engagement and co-production of change and understand how this can support the sustainability of any change
  • know some of the key questions to address in relation to workforce planning for implementation of sustainable midwifery continuity of carer models
